1. According to Jesus' teaching about giving to those in need (vv. 1-4), prayer (vv. 5-15), and fasting (vv. 16-18) - what underlying principle is always present?
2. What does 6:8 teach us and why is this such good news? How can you better incorporate this perspective into your prayer life?
3. It turns out, Jesus has lots to say about money. What does he teach in 6:19-21?
4. Jesus says plainly in 6:24, "No one can serve two masters." This may seem easy and obvious but it is serious. In our lives, many things - including ourselves - compete for attention, importance, influence, and primary loyalty and priority. If we are devoted to anything other than God, then we are serving an idol. Why is this so serious? And, what can we do to avoid this danger?
5. What does Jesus say on the subject of worrying in 6:25-34? Why do you think we tend to worry so much?
This is a wonderful chapter, loaded with profound and practical stuff. As you reflect, given that prayer is central to the chapter, maybe you want to take a moment or two to pray (privately and secretly). As you do, may you be aware of God's presence, truly satisfied in him, and reminded that he knows what you need ... even before you ask.
Perhaps you can also confess sin - Jesus has paid this debt and therefore, as we acknowledge his sacrifice and live for him, we stand forgiven and justified.
Given what we have read together, perhaps you want to surrender an area in your life where you sense you are full of (unhealthy) worry. Maybe ask God to unearth the reasons for that worry. Would you be reminded that he is in complete control, and his will for you, according to his timeline, will exceed whatever you could even dream of. Hallelujah!
