Day 19 - Matthew 14 ("Sitting on the grass and sitting in the boat")

1. Initially, why did Herod want to kill John and what prevented him from doing so?

2. Briefly outline the awful circumstances of John's death.

3. Upon hearing that John was killed, what does Jesus do?

4. The feeding of the 5,000 was truly a remarkable event. What do you think people were thinking as food was distributed and they ate?

5. What does Jesus do privately in v. 23? Why do you think he did this?

6. Jesus walks on the lake. Again, an absolutely incredible thing to do. Just amazing. As he witnesses this, what does Peter get right and what does Peter get wrong?

7. What conclusion to the disciples draw in v. 33 and what do they do?

8. Search for the term "Son of God" in Matthew's gospel. If you can, list the occasions when it is said and who makes the statement or asks the question.

The events in this chapter are truly exceptional and extraordinary. What would it have been like to be present for the feeding of the 5,000 or to watch Jesus walk on water?

While Jesus did these amazing things, he also did an ordinary and typical human thing - he mourned. He grieved for his dead friend.

As the Son of God, Jesus knew in advance when and how John would die. He also would know, better than anyone else, that they would meet again in eternity. And yet, still, he grieved. He was not exempt from this powerful emotion that we all experience.

Amidst his grief and private reflection, a large crowd gathers around him, almost like an interruption. Jesus sees them and he has compassion on them.

In this chapter, as elsewhere, we see Jesus: fully God and fully human. He does miraculous things that only God can do; yet he also takes a few quiet moments, he spends time with friends, and he eats a large meal. All of it, remarkable and fascinating.

As you reflect on what you've read and as you take a moment to pray, think about the compassion that Jesus showed to the people and, specifically, the compassion he has shown you. It's beautiful.

Also, are you prepared to echo what the disciples did in v. 33? Not visibly as in the case of the eyewitnesses, but by faith, can we also say: "Truly you are the Son of God."

If we make that declaration, and believe it in our hearts, then we have passed from death to life. It seems that Jesus is still in the miracle business now, as he restores us and others to himself. Wow. What a joy! Praise God!
