1. Why is it hypocritical of the chief priests to refuse to deposit the coins returned by Judas?

2. What is "the Field of Blood" (v. 8) and how is this transaction the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy?

3. What did Jesus do (or not do) that amazed Pilate (v. 14)?

4. It is interesting that Pilate knew the motive of the people (v. 18). What was it?

5. What message did Pilate's wife send to him and why did she send it?

6. What incredible and tragic statement do the people make in v. 25?

7. In an awful and terrible way, the soldiers actually say the correct thing in v. 29. What did they say?

Consider, given what we know from Romans 14:11 and Philippians 2:10-11, that these soldiers must again bow their knee to Jesus - either in reverence or in judgment.

8. List some of the things said by various people in vv. 38-44.

9. From the cross, what Psalm does Jesus quote?

10. What does the centurion correctly say in v. 54?

11. What interesting note is made by Matthew in vv. 55-56?

12. What do Simon the Cyrene and Joseph of Arimathea do in this chapter?

13. What arrangements are made, and why are they made, in vv. 62-66?

There is a tremendous volume of material in Matthew 27; almost too much to process in a single read. Therefore, take it slow, and consider the events you read about, and consider their significance.

These events are significant for the course of human history, and they are significant for each of us - and for all people - personally.

What Jesus did here either won your freedom or you remain in bondage.

Perhaps take a moment to pray, to acknowledge Jesus' sacrifice, and to express your gratitude. He is worthy.
