Introduction
Well, Romans 8 is perhaps one of the most cherished chapters of the Bible. The promises here are rich and breath-taking.
By way of introduction, just one thing to keep in mind. Recall Romans 1-3, where the condition of humanity was so bleak.
And also the chapter we have just read, about our powerlessness to achieve the full demands of God's law. Really, our inability to do good.
All of these conditions and needs are met in this chapter as the gospel is displayed beautifully and powerfully.
Questions
In v. 5, what is the contrast in "mind set"? And list the consequences (bi-products) of each of these.
What are the two "realms" listed in vv. 9-10 and what factor (or condition) distinguishes a person?
According to v. 14, if you are led by the Spirit then you are a __________?
From the first half of the chapter (vv. 1-16), list some of the things that are said about the Holy Spirit.
What is "eager expectation" (v. 19) and "groaning" (v. 22) all about?
Who is interceding for us? (vv. 24, 25, 34). What does this mean and why is it so remarkable?
Discuss this "chain" that we find in v. 30: predestined - called - justified - glorified.
Based on v. 35 and the verses that follow, what can separate us from God?
Reflection
Today, not much to add. If you are not in awe after reading this chapter, maybe read it again. And pray that the Spirit would open up this truth in your heart. I think you will find God's offer of grace irresistible.
Here are two favourite verses:
"Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" -Romans 8:1
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." -Romans 8:28
