Day 46 - Romans 13 ("The Debt to Love")

Introduction

This first part of this chapter considers how a believer ought to respond to governments and authorities - and why.

The middle section, and the part that undergirds the first, is our obligation to love. As Paul writes, "... and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.' ... Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law" (vv. 9-10).

Finally, we are urged to live in the light, making no room for the darkness or even for thinking about how people who are lost in darkness behave. As we read earlier in the book, we have been set free from that.

Questions

  1. What does Paul say about authorities in vv. 1-5? By whom are they established and how should a believer to behave?

  2. What does v. 7 teach us about obligations?

  3. What dos vv. 8-10 teach us about love for our neighbour? Does this remind you of anything Jesus said (taught) in Matthew's gospel?

  4. Given that the completion of salvation is very soon, how should we live?

  5. In v. 14, we learn that we should not even think about things that gratify our sinful nature, let along do those things. Why is correct and godly thinking so important? (Notice a connection here with a 'renewed mind,' Romans 12:2).

Reflection

The Bible is incredible. And, given its length, the original languages, the history and geography, and its present day application in our lives - there is no end to study. Even full-time, we could never know everything there is to know.

Maybe this is daunting. Or, maybe it is exhilarating. To know this is the revelation of God and we have access to it.

Of all the things that can and should be said, fortunately we have a wonderful conclusion, which is both a good place to start and a principle to work-out every day:

"Love your neighbour as yourself." -Romans 13:9

This is the core of Christian community and Christ is the head. Amen.
